Yeast Infection or something else? (very personal, women only, please)?

I have a little bit of an issue going on right now, and I’m not sure if it might be a yeast infection, or some other kind of an infection. Please, thoughtful and genuine answers, only! I am a female, of course, and I am 23 years old. I am still a virgin, I’ve never really done anything. Anyway, I noticed a few days ago I started having a really severe itching and burning sensation "down there." It wasn’t inside the vagina, but all outside on the outer lips. It just came on all of a sudden early in the evening. The next day I woke up, and everything was still the same, except I had some yellow discharge. But, it was literally a fluorescent yellow. Not, exactly the same shade as a fluorescent yellow highlighter but pretty close to that shade. I didn’t know what to do, and I’ve never gotten a pap smear exam yet, or anything like that. I know I should be doing them, even though I’ve never been sexually active, but I am very, very shy and very terrified of doctors, and I heard the exam hurts a little/has some discomfort. And, I am just too afraid to try it, also, I’m currently not working, and I have no income at all, and no health insurance. I can’t afford to buy any either. We do have a Family Planning close by. I could always go there for the exams and I’d probably qualify for their free services, but I just don’t feel ready to try it yet, and I was told my chances of cervical cancer and such are small, since I’m not active. Anyway, So, I’ve had all the itching and burning and discharge for a few days. I talked to my mom about it, she said she used to get the same symptoms shortly before her period would start, it would only last a few days, then go away, around the time her period would come. I am due to start mine in about 1 week and a few days. Also, there has been no odor with discharge. But, about 2 nights ago, the burning sensation stopped, and the itching is still there, but very slightly, and only in 1 spot. And I am still getting discharge. But, not as much as I was. Everything really seems to be slowing down, and it looks like it might clearing up on it’s own now. I was reading about different types of vaginal infections and such, and it did say, that a lot of times in most women, they can come for a few days, then randomly clear up on their own in just a few days. Sounds like that’s what might be happening with me? I did notice today there is a very mild odor with the discharge, but not much of one, as I said it is mild, and it’s not "fishy" or anything. I don’t even know what kind of odor it is, but it’s not a fishy smell, like they say usually comes with discharge. Anyway, does anyone have an idea what be going on with me? And any advice for it, other then going to the doctor? I’m going to give it more time, and see if it clears up on it’s own soon, since it seems to be so far, If it doesn’t completely go away soon, or does go away but then comes back, then I’ll probably try to get into Family Planning for some exams and such. But, does anyone know what might be going on with me? Also, I have been using Vagisil cream for the discomfort, it’s helping a lot, thankfully. Any advice/answers? And, sorry this was so long, I didn’t mean to ramble, just wanted to be informational and mention everything I thought I needed to. Thanks!

if you are still a virgin, then it sounds like a yeast infection to me. definitely and infection of some sort. but i am not a doctor. i have had yeast infections before and they have sounded similar to what you are describing. i am still embarrassed when i get it and dont want to go to the docs. there places you can buy over the counter meds online. http://tips-n-reviews.com/ under general health there is a med called yeastrol. it worked well for me i would give that a try. if it does work you should go see the doc. it can be embarrassing but remember they are doctors they see that stuff everyday and once you are out of there you will feel better.

First of all, it does sound like an infection of some sort. You are way past the age where you should be getting pap smears yearly now.

A pap smear will not only save your life if you have abnormal cells that would’ve turned into cervical cancer, but the physical exam will let the doctor see if anything else is going on down there that is not right.

It is uncomfortable and embarassing for me too. I dread it every year, but I am happy that I am taking care of my health and that I’m preventing myself from one less cancer.

I think it’s time you make that appointment whether or not this infection clears up on it’s own. You don’t want to be a statistic of another young girl who died from cancer she could’ve easily prevented.

Sorry to lecture you, but it bothers me when girls my age don’t take care of themselves.

Honestly I think your best bet is going to the doctor’s. I’m a virgin, too and I had a similar problem. The doctor gave me something to clear it up and it was gone in a few days. You don’t just go to the gyno to check for cervical cancer. There’s infections you can get without even so much as seeing a dick in your whole life!
Other than going to the doctor I would suggest washing "down there" with a mild soap like something from Summer’s Eve or an unscented soap. Sometimes people make the mistake of having a problem like this and then ferociously washing their private areas, which actually makes it worse! You have to have some bacteria in there and if you wash too much with a harsh soap you can get even more problems. You have to have a certain pH level to have a happy and healthy vagina! Keep using those products like Vagasil because this is what they are for. Hope this helps!
