There is no real "cause" but there are things you can do that can help prevent them.

No, UTI’s and yeast infections really aren’t similar. First, yeast infections are usually in the vagina (but you can also get them in other places, like your mouth..my father actually got one in his shoulder), and they are caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. That yeast is always there, and the levels are usually in-check.

But, if the yeast grows, then you end up with a yeast infection. The symptoms are increased discharge, and it is usually whitish, and kind of lumpy. Itching and burning are also common symptoms.

The overgrowth of yeast can be contributed to by taking antibiotics, wearing clothing that doesn’t "breathe", staying in a wet bathing suit, and even poor diet. People who are pregnant or have HIV are also more prone to having them.

Eating yogurt has also been reported to help some women keep yeast infections away.

UTI’s on the other hand, are Urinary Tract Infections, and are caused by an overgrowth of bacteria.

The symptoms of a UTI are burning during urination, a constant feeling that you need to urinate, and possibly stomach pain, especially if the infection is spreading to the kidneys.

Wiping properly (front to back), urinating both before and after sex, and sometimes taking cranberry can help keep UTI’s at bay. Also, be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Urinating flushes out some of the bacteria, so if you keep your fluid intake high, you will flush out more bacteria.

Another difference is that you can treat a yeast infection without seeing a doctor. You can buy an over the counter treatment for about $10. UTI’s, on the other hand, require antibiotics, which must be prescribed by a doctor. There are products out there (AZO for one) that help to supress some of the symptoms of a UTI while you are waiting to get an appointment with the doctor, but they do not cure the infection itself.

First off: if you are not sure, go to a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

A yeast infection is caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring fungus in the vagina. It can be caused by all kinds of things, including antibiotics, wearing wet clothing, and having too much sugar in your system. The symptoms are itchy vaginal area, cottage-cheese like discharge, redness, soreness, and maybe some odor.

A UTI is a bacteria infection of the urinary tract. Common symptoms are frequent urination, not feeling like you can empty your bladder completely, pain while urinating, and sometimes blood in the urine. Sometimes they are caused by improper wiping (as you said). They can also be caused by sex. The act of sex forces bacteria into the urethra. Urinate before and after sex to help prevent them. Also make sure you use the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge (holding it gives the bacteria more of a chance to latch on). Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice to help wash it out, too.

uti is a bacterial infection of the bladder, yeast is a fungal infection of the vagina. UTI in women is caused by: wiping back to front instead of front to back, not drinking enough water, and eating too much sugar. Yeast infections are caused by an imbalance of some sort in the chemistry of the vagina causing the natural bacteria to die off and leaving the natural yeast that lives there to over grow. Yeast can be minimized by eating yogurt daily.
UTI must be treated with antibiotics or they can rapidly spread to the kidneys, and you cannot live without your kidneys.
Yeast can be treated easily with over the counter products at your local pharmacy.
UTI symptoms include, frequent urination and urgency, pain with urination also can occur, the urine takes on a cloudy appearance, and can get very odorous.
Yeast infections symptoms include, perineal itch, intense itch, a "clotted" white discharge (some describe it as cottage cheese in appearance) and general swelling and redness in the genital region.

    UTI –

Burning while peeing, pink pee (blood in pee), the pee has a darker color, you feel like you have to pee a lot

Urinary tract infections typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. The urinary system has infection-fighting properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria and is designed to keep out such microscopic invaders. However, certain factors increase the chances that bacteria will enter the urinary tract, take hold and multiply into a full-blown infection.

    Yeast Infection –

Itching or soreness, burning while you pee, white discharge that looks like cottage cheese

Most yeast infections are caused by a type of yeast called Candida albicans.
A healthy vagina has many bacteria and a small number of yeast cells. The most common bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, help keep other organisms—like the yeast—under control.
When something happens to change the balance of these organisms, yeast can grow too much and cause symptoms. Taking antibiotics sometimes causes this imbalance. The high estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy can also cause it. So can certain health problems, like diabetes or HIV infection.

it is possible to get a yeast infection (("yi")) and uti simultaneously. yi are in the actual vagina and a "cheese-like" discharge is apparent. i have not experienced one personally but a friend i have gets them a lot. shes an exotic dancer, so i dont know if the exposure to dirt "on the job" or something has to do with that. they say eating yogurt helps prevent yis also.

utis are in the urethra. i have had them and it is marked a burning sensation while urinating, in addition to bladder "urgency", or feeling like you need to go all the time, even if you dont. you can get either, esp. utis, from sex. doctors say to prevent them, make sure to go ((pee)) at least 15 minutes before sex and always make sure to go afterward, and make sure your partner is recently bathed. wear cotton lined undies, not synthetic fibers, drink lots of water, and of course good hygiene is most important. if you get recurring ones have your doc do some tests or get some antibiotics. good luck
